Hi ladies,
Most of us have a form like this somewhere. It sits on the hall table, from the council or the DVLA, with a date printed near the top and a red circle round it in biro, because you knew you would forget.
This week, a form like that was put in front of every company in Britain that lets people buy, hold or send digital money. The date is circled. The question is how many will return it.
THE SIGNAL
On 30 September, the FCA, the body that oversees financial firms in Britain, opened an application door for companies that deal in cryptoassets. That is the official word for digital money such as Bitcoin, which exists only as entries in a shared online record, with no coin or note behind it. LeapRate reported it on 1 October.
The official name for the door is an authorisation gateway. Plainly: an approval gate. A firm applies, the FCA examines it, and only then may the firm say it is approved. Any firm that wants to keep serving British customers must apply by 28 February 2027.
The new rules begin on 25 October 2027. Until now, the FCA’s job with these firms was mostly to register them against money-laundering rules and to police their advertising. From that date they come under full FCA regulation for the first time, as The Paypers reported.
There is some mercy in the timetable. As reported, firms that apply in time and are still waiting for an answer when the rules begin can carry on while the FCA decides. So the date is not a cliff. It is a sorting line: firms that applied on one side, firms that did not on the other.
Now the number in the headline. In July, the UK firm Zumo surveyed crypto platforms, the websites and apps where people buy and keep digital money, and Crowdfund Insider reported that only one in ten believed it was fully prepared. Two cautions. That was before the gate opened, and it is firms marking their own homework; the coverage does not say how many were asked. Treat it as a weather warning, not a verdict.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOU
Think of asking a gas engineer to show their registration card before they touch your boiler. Nobody thinks that is rude. Authorisation is that card, for firms that handle digital money.
It is not a promise of profit. Digital money can still rise and fall in price, and authorisation does not change that. What it tells you is who is answerable, and to whom, if something goes wrong.
Over the next twelve months, the platforms you may meet will divide. Some will be approved, some will be waiting, and some may stop serving Britain. Which is which will not always be announced. Often you will have to ask.
This is where sovereignty stops being a grand word. Here it means knowing whose name sits on the statement that says your money is there. If you cannot name the firm and find it on the FCA’s register, its public list of firms, you are trusting a stranger on the strength of a good website.
A woman 50 and over has an advantage here that nobody has marketed to her. She has spent decades reading small print and noticing who is, and is not, answerable. That is wisdom, and it is exactly the skill this moment rewards.
THE SILENCE WORTH NAMING
In this week’s reading, there was a great deal about deadlines, firms and rules, and almost nothing speaking plainly to women about what any of it means for the money in their own hands. The few stories on women and digital sovereignty were mostly about national policy abroad.
That is not a verdict on anyone. It is an unfinished page. The rules have only just begun to be applied for, which means the plain explaining is still to be written, and there are months in which to learn it first. The first step takes ten minutes.
YOUR ONE STEP THIS WEEK
Take a sticky note and write two dates on it: 28 February 2027, when firms must have applied, and 25 October 2027, when the new rules begin. Put it where you keep your own paperwork.
Then choose one firm: a platform you use, or one a friend has mentioned. Look its name up on the FCA’s register and write down exactly what it says today, with today’s date. If it says nothing, write that down too.
You are not judging the firm. You are taking a dated snapshot, so that when 28 February has passed you can look again and see what has changed.
If this helped you, share it with a woman who isn’t part of these conversations yet.
Educational only, and not financial advice — a first step, offered freely, for your own wisdom and your own research.
Wisdom for direction. Identity for prosperity.
Be blessed. 🙏
